South Carolina Attorney General (AG) Alan Wilson, a Republican, is leading a coalition of state attorneys general in a bold effort to investigate Dr. Anthony Fauci’s role in the federal government’s response to the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Wilson announced the investigation in a letter to Congress Wednesday, Feb. 5, which named 17 other AGs as signatories. The letter, addressed to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), commended ongoing Congressional investigations into alleged mismanagement misleading statements, and suppression of scientific debate during the pandemic. It specifically referenced the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic’s final report, which outlines potential misconduct by high-ranking officials – including Dr. Fauci.
The report highlighted several key areas of concern, including Fauci’s alleged efforts to discredit the lab leak theory of COVID-19’s origins despite mounting evidence supporting it. It also accused him of providing false testimony regarding gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China funded by the National Institutes of Health. Moreover, the report also alleged that Fauci mismanaged taxpayer funds and suppressed scientific dissent on vaccine risks.
The signatories to the letter include attorneys general from states such as Texas, Florida, Louisiana and Tennessee, among others. Their collective effort reflects a broader commitment to upholding public trust and ensuring that future public health crises are managed with greater transparency and accountability.
AGs defy Biden’s pardon of Fauci: State-level investigations underway
The AGs’ push for accountability comes despite former President Joe Biden’s preemptive pardon of Fauci, issued during the final hours of the Democrat in office as the 46th president. The clemency issued on Jan. 20 also applied to retired Gen. Mark Milley, members of the House Select Committee on the Jan. 6 Attack, and their staffers.
Biden framed the pardons as a necessary safeguard against politically motivated prosecutions under his successor. «These public servants have served our nation with honor and distinction and do not deserve to be the targets of unjustified and politically motivated prosecutions,» the 82-year-old said at the time. While the pardon shields the former White House chief medical advisor from federal prosecution, he remains liable to legal action at the state level. «[Former] President Biden’s blanket pardon of Dr. Fauci is a shameful attempt to prevent accountability,» the South Carolina AG said in a statement. «If any of these findings indicate violations of state laws, we are fully prepared to take appropriate action to ensure justice is served.»
The coalition’s letter to Johnson and Thune underscored the importance of state-level investigations, emphasizing that federal pardons do not extend to state jurisdictions. They urged lawmakers to continue investigative efforts and ensure that all responsible parties are held accountable at both federal and state levels.
Fauci, who served as a key figure in the U.S. pandemic response, has become a lightning rod for criticism over mask mandates, vaccine policies and other measures deemed as medical tyranny. President Donald Trump, who frequently clashed with Fauci during his first administration, has also targeted the infectious disease expert, accusing him of mismanaging the pandemic and misleading the public.
