It’s Over: Europe Scraps Military Aid to ‘Corrupt’ Ukraine

EU scraps military aid to Ukraine.

Europe has axed 40 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine, branding the nation too corrupt to trust, as E.U. leaders pivoted at a summit Thursday.

The decision, influenced by President Donald Trump’s ceasefire push, trashed the ‘Kallas plan’—named after E.U. foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas—which aimed to double aid in 2025 with two million artillery rounds, air defenses, missiles, drones, and fighter jets worth 35 billion euros, plus 5 billion in ammo. The move came despite a Ukrainian drone strike on a Russian nuclear air base that same day, underscoring the bloc’s sudden retreat from its war-torn ally.

Infowars.com reports: “…large southern European countries opposed Kallas’ proposal that each member state should contribute ‘their fair share’ relative to GDP. They asked Brussels to find other ways, possibly by incorporating the remaining profits generated by Russia’s frozen assets,” The European Conservative said Friday.

The plan did see significant support from a number of northern E.U. member states however it lacked support from many southern and central member states. France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Hungary and Slovakia opposed the 40 billion euro amount.

“France, Italy and Spain—boasting the largest European economies after Germany—all gave economic and budgetary reasons for not backing the plan this time. They also called for caution against military escalation and suggested it would be a good idea to see how the ongoing U.S.-led peace process turns out,” The European Conservative said.

The disagreements won out, first with the plan being delayed and then eventually canceled all together. A smaller military aid package will still be delivered to Kiev, however.

“…the latest version of the plan will focus solely on delivering the two million artillery rounds this year, which in itself could prove tricky, given that the E.U. failed spectacularly on its previous pledge of delivering half of that amount in 2023,” The European Conservative said.

Interestingly, the final decision to drop the massive funding package happened after President Donald Trump’s telephone call with Ukrainian Dictator Vladimir Zelensky on Wednesday. That call echoed the sentiment expressed in Trump’s previous call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday in which the two leaders discussed their shared hopes and goals for a ceasefire agreement. Trump himself discussed the ceasefire as a done-deal after the call with Moscow, however the day after the call with Kiev, Ukrainian drone stuck a Russian nuclear bomb base in a massive escalation to the conflict.

“It seems E.U. countries are starting to realize that prolonging the war with endless weapon deliveries may not be the best way forward and that, despite all their criticism, Trump’s diplomatic approach is delivering better than they had expected. The next step would be to drop the virtue signaling and start working with the U.S. to reach peace as soon as possible, but that may be a big ask from a Brussels that prefers to deny reality,” The European Conservative said.
