Haas duo dejected after Imola as Bearman explains costly issue and Ocon admits there’s ‘plenty for us to review’

Ollie Bearman and Esteban Ocon were both left to rue frustrating weekends at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, with their Haas team coming away point-less for the third successive Formula 1 event.

After losing a lap time strong enough for the second phase of Qualifying amid confusion over when a red flag had been thrown, Bearman started Sunday’s race down in 19th position – one spot behind team mate Ocon.

Bearman cycled his way through to the top 10 with a lengthy first stint and took advantage of the Virtual Safety Car to swap tyres at the halfway mark, only for a loose wheel to force him back into the pits one lap later.

Having rejoined the track in 19th, Bearman made up a couple of places thanks to Kimi Antonelli’s retirement and a late pass on Gabriel Bortoleto, but the Briton could not hide his disappointment over what might have been.

“Honestly, it wasn’t a bad race at all,” said Bearman, who last scored points in Bahrain with a run to 10th.

“We were in a really good position, going for the one-stop, so when the VSC came out we switched onto the medium [tyres]… I was coming out of the pits just behind [George] Russell, and he was P7 at the end.

“We were on for a good race, I think, but unfortunately my wheel wasn’t attached properly in the pit stops.”

Reflecting on the weekend as a whole, following the latest batch of Haas updates, Bearman continued: “The pace was good and the car felt good all weekend.

“There’s been quite a few points that we need to brush up on, I don’t think it’s just… it’s a number of things. [Qualifying] was totally out of our hands, but we have a bit of work to do to put things together.”

Ocon reveals the cause of his DNF at Imola

As for Ocon, he gained two positions at the start before pitting at the end of the first lap for a set of hard tyres, in what Haas described as an “aggressive” strategy to make up ground.

However, as he continued his fight in the midfield, Ocon’s race was brought to a premature end on Lap 29 due to an “air consumption issue”.

“We basically boxed [early] to try something different and we were ahead of quite a lot of cars at that point,” the Frenchman commented. “Unfortunately, the [tyre] degradation was much higher for me, which was quite unexpected, so this is something we need to understand.”

He added: “It wasn’t going to be a great race to be fair. Plenty for us to review from this weekend and hopefully we can come back stronger in the next one.”

Haas remain sixth in the Teams’ Championship after the Imola weekend with 20 points to their name, followed by Aston Martin on 14, Racing Bulls on 10, Alpine on seven and Kick Sauber on six.
