Google confirmed it will no longer launch new Nest thermostat models in Europe as it shifts focus to supporting third-party smart energy devices through its Google Home platform.

The company cited the wide variety of hardware and software standards in the region “that make it challenging to build for the diverse set of homes”.

However, third-generation Nest Learning Thermostats and Nest Thermostat E models will continue to be available across the region while supplies last, receiving security updates and app support.

Phase out support
Alongside the shift in Europe, Google also announced plans to phase out support for its first and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats globally. Starting 25 October 2025, the original Nest Learning Thermostat models, launched in 2011 and 2014, will no longer receive software updates or be supported in the Nest and Google Home apps.

Features like Home/Away Assist and remote control through Google Assistant will be disabled, although users will still be able to adjust temperature settings manually on the devices.

The tech giant described the decision as “difficult” and was driven by the challenges of maintaining software for ageing devices that were more than a decade old. The move comes as the Alphabet-owned company looks to prioritise its latest hardware, particularly the 4th generation Nest Learning Thermostat, which it described as its “smartest and most beautiful” model yet.

The company further extended discounts to facilitate the transition for affected customers, including $130 off the 4th-gen thermostat in the US, $160 off in Canada, and 50 per cent off the Tado Smart Thermostat X Starter Kit in Europe.

In a further update, Google revealed that users will be able to create and adjust thermostat schedules directly through the Google Home app later this year, offering expanded control beyond the Nest app for the first time.
