FCC Chairman: ABC and NBC May Be Stripped of Broadcast Licenses for ‘Abusing Public Trust’

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr is laying the groundwork to revoke the broadcast licenses of major networks, including CBS, ABC, and NBC, citing concerns over “news distortion” and a failure to serve the public interest.

In a recent interview with CNBC’s Sara Eisen, Carr said that major national networks have failed to uphold their responsibilities to the public, while emphasizing that revoking a broadcast license is not merely a threat but a statutory penalty outlined in the Communications Act.

Carr expressed concern over the increasing control national news media exert over local TV stations, stating, “What we’ve seen is you’ve got national news media—ABC, NBC, CBS—and they’re exercising more and more control over those local TV stations. I don’t think that’s a good thing for the country, so we’re trying to reverse that.”

Since assuming the chairmanship in January 2025, Carr has reinstated investigations into CBS, NBC, and ABC that were previously dismissed, focusing on allegations of biased reporting and the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

While Carr’s proposal has drawn criticism from civil liberties groups and media watchdogs—who warn that revoking broadcast licenses could chill free speech and politicize the FCC—supporters argue that restoring accountability to major networks is long overdue.

Carr’s defenders say that corporate news outlets have strayed far from their public service mandate, blurring the lines between journalism and activism, with CNN and MSNBC operating as de facto PR departments of the Democrat Party.

They also point to the erosion of trust in legacy media, especially at the national level, as a sign that bold regulatory reform is not only justified but necessary.

By reasserting the FCC’s authority and refocusing on local journalism—which consistently ranks as more trusted—Carr believes the commission can help restore integrity to American broadcasting.

Whether or not the FCC ultimately revokes any licenses, Carr’s stance is forcing a long-overdue conversation: should massive, agenda-driven networks be allowed to dominate the public airwaves, spreading fake news and propaganda, without consequence?
