Debate on support for EU steel and the role of energy-intensive industries

From 9.00, MEPs, Commission Executive Vice-President Séjourné and the Polish Minister for EU Affairs Szłapka will discuss the new action plan for a competitive and decarbonised steel and metals industry in Europe. From around 10.30, they will review with Vice-President Séjourné the Commission’s approach to other EU energy-intensive industries, followed by a vote on a resolution on Thursday.

Threats to fundamental rights in Hungary

Starting around 15.00, MEPs will debate recent legislative changes in Hungary and their impact on fundamental rights with Commissioner McGrath and Polish Minister for EU Affairs Szłapka.

Vote on Parliament’s priorities for the 2026 EU budget

At noon, MEPs will vote on their priorities for the next annual EU budget. The draft text puts the focus on the need to improve the EU’s security and defence capabilities, economic competitiveness and resilience, sustainability, climate, and the single market. A press conference with the rapporteur is scheduled for 14.00.

In brief

Military mobility. At around 16.00 MEPs will assess the importance of EU cross-border transport infrastructure for Europe’s security, in the light of the threat posed by Russia’s war on Ukraine, in a debate with Commissioner Tzitzikostas and Polish Minister Szłapka,.

Social Europe. At around 13.00, MEPs, Commission Executive Vice-President Mînzatu, and Polish Minister Szłapka will debate the cost of living crisis, and how to protect citizens’ jobs, wages, and health.

Addressing the Cyprus problem. At 11.50, EP President Roberta Metsola will make a statement on the progress of UN-led efforts to restart negotiations on a solution to the Cyprus problem, followed by a round of interventions by political group speakers.

EU Roma strategy. From 18.00, MEPs and Commissioner Lahbib will discuss the fight against discrimination against Roma people, and how to protect their fundamental rights.

Human rights and democracy. In the evening, Parliament will hold urgent debates on the prosecution of journalists in Cameroon, the execution spree in Iran, and the repression by Lukashenka’s regime in Belarus. Three separate resolutions will be put to a vote on Thursday.

Votes

At 12.00, MEPs will vote, among other things, on:

  • the EU’s common foreign and security policy in 2024;
  • the EU’s common security and defence policy in 2024;
  • human rights and democracy in the world and the European Union’s policy on the matter in 2024;
  • the Fisheries Partnership Agreement between the EU and the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, and
  • strengthening the security of EU citizens’ identity cards and residence documents.
