Responding to citizen’s expectations and reflecting EP priorities for the 10th legislature, European Parliament political group leaders (President Metsola and chairs of political groups) have decided to upgrade the subcommittees on Security and Defence and on Public Health as full standing committees, as well as the creation of a special committee on democracy shield and one on housing.
It is proposed that:
- the subcommittee on Security and Defence becomes the standing committee on Security and Defence;
- the subcommittee on Public Health becomes the standing committee on Public Health;
- a special committee on European Democracy Shield is set up;
- a special committee on Housing Crisis in the European Union is set up;
The full House will vote on Wednesday 18 December at noon on the mandate, number of members and term of office of the new standing and special committees.
The lists of members will be announced at a subsequent plenary session.
Background
Changes to the list of standing committees (Annex VI) through the creation of a new standing committee, or the set-up of special committees require a decision of the Conference of Presidents and a plenary vote.
Annex VI of the European Parliament’s Rules of Procedure listing EP standing committees will be adapted accordingly. It will also define the committees’ responsibilities.
Special committees, established for dealing with specific topics, have a term of up to 12 months unless extended by Parliament (Rule 213).
