Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced Wednesday on X that his tenure as a “special government employee” advising the Trump administration has officially ended.
Musk, who was the public face of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), was brought on as an SGE (special government employee) to help identify wasteful spending and recommend cost-cutting measures across federal agencies.
But in recent months, Musk has voiced growing frustration over what he described as the administration’s lack of genuine commitment to fiscal reform. His departure signals a clear break with the White House over mounting concerns about unchecked government spending.

Musk’s departure follows his public criticism of President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” a legislative package proposing substantial tax cuts and increased spending on defense and border security. Musk expressed concerns that the bill would significantly raise the national debt, stating it “undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing.”

Musk in his post stated, “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.”
The “DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”

The billionaire thanked US President Donald Trump – and said he was stepping down as his “scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end”.
The Tesla owner – who led the Department of Government Efficiency – said he was thankful “for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending”.
The move by Musk is not so surprising, considering he previously announced his time at DOGE was only meant to be temporary.
After making the announcement, Musk’s replies were flooded with thousands of people thanking him for his time at DOGE.
