Katy Perry, CBS’ Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez to Blast Off on Blue Origin Rocket–Because Earth Has Had Enough

In what might be the first space mission designed to make Earth a little more tolerable, Jeff Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez, singer-turned-pop-culture-relic Katy Perry, and CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King will be among an all-female passenger crew blasting off on a Blue Origin rocket this spring.

Blue Origin, apparently taking a “ladies first” approach to launching questionable celebrities into orbit, announced Thursday that this will be its 11th human spaceflight under the New Shepard program—and, honestly, if the ship doesn’t come back, it might be its most successful mission yet.

Bezos, who has spent the last few years playing real-life Lex Luthor, continues his obsession with shooting people into space, this time opting for a lineup that feels like it was put together by an out-of-touch Hollywood agent. No word yet on whether the mission includes a one-way ticket, but here’s hoping.

“This is the first all-female flight crew since Valentina Tereshkova’s solo spaceflight in 1963,” Blue Origin noted.

In addition to Perry, King, and Sanchez, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen, and nonprofit leader Kerianne Flynn will also be on the rocket.

Blue Origin also noted that it was Sanchez “who brought the mission together” to launch on the New Shepard rocket.

“She is honored to lead a team of explorers on a mission that will challenge their perspectives of Earth, empower them to share their own stories, and create lasting impact that will inspire generations to come,” the company said.

A specific date for the six-person, all-female Blue Origin rocket launch has yet to be revealed.
