The Council of the European Union has today appointed Iliana Ivanova to serve once again as the Bulgarian Member of the European Court of Auditors (ECA).
Ms Ivanova was until very recently the European Commissioner responsible for innovation, research, culture, education and youth. She previously served as a Member of the European Court of Auditors between 2013 and 2023, during which time she notably chaired the ECA’s Audit Quality Control Committee, and as Dean of Chamber II was responsible for audit tasks relating to regional, social and cohesion policy. Iliana Ivanova has now been appointed for a new term as an ECA Member from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2030.
The Council takes its decisions on the basis of member states’ proposals and after consulting the European Parliament.
The Treaty requires the Members to perform their duties in complete independence and in the general interest of the European Union.
The ECA’s organisation chart and governance structure may be consulted on its website (eca.europa.eu), which will be updated in due course.
Note to editors
The European Court of Auditors is the EU’s independent audit institution. Its audit reports and opinions are an essential element of the EU’s accountability chain, and are used to hold to account those responsible for managing the EU’s budget and implementing EU policies.
