Haas driver Ollie Bearman, Williams’ Alex Albon, and Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson have each received five-second time penalties for a myriad of incidents during the eventful Sprint at the Miami International Autodrome.
After a period of heavy rainfall caused a delayed start, everyone on the grid started on intermediate tyres. However, the surface quickly began to dry out – although there are no mandated pit stops in a Sprint, many of the drivers were forced into the pits to switch onto slick tyres.
As Haas finished changing Bearman’s tyres, he was released into the pit lane, directly into the path of Kick Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg. The German then had «to brake and take evasive action», as detailed in the Stewards’ report of the incident.
The investigation used video evidence to determine that a five-second penalty was a suitable consequence for the unsafe release, dropping Bearman from P8 (where he had claimed the final point of the Sprint) to P14.
Bearman has not scored points since his P10 finish in Bahrain
It had been an impressive performance from the rookie after an underwhelming Sprint Qualifying saw him settle for P20 on the starting grid. From there, he improved 12 positions around the temporary circuit, but the penalty leaves Haas with zero points so far in Miami as Esteban Ocon similarly finished outside of the top eight.

For Albon, his fourth place finish was taken away due to him failing to stay above the minimum time under Safety Car conditions, demoting him to P11. However, the Stewards noted that «the track conditions were not ideal and that no unsafe or dangerous situation was created by the driver», electing not to award him any penalty points.
Lastly, Lawson failed to escape a five-second penalty and an additional penalty point for his collision with Fernando Alonso during an attempted overtake which saw the Aston Martin racer retire from the Sprint.

The trio of decisions promotes Yuki Tsunoda to receive three points for Red Bull Racing, with Max Verstappen failing to score due to a 10-second time penalty given during the Sprint, also for an unsafe release.
Kimi Antonelli, who initially dropped down the order following the pit lane incident with Verstappen, and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly were also pushed up into the points.
Behind the unaffected top-three finishers, the final order from the Sprint was George Russell in P4, followed by Lance Stroll, Tsunoda, Antonelli and Gasly.
